ABOUT US

Set up in 1970 by Father and Son, Jimmy and Kenny Campbell, this is our story so far.
Jimmy & Nancy Campbell

Jimmy & Nancy Campbell

Along with their son Kenny, James & Nancy set up Dae-it-Yersel in 1970 which then was located on Queen St. Dunoon.

A few years later the business relocated to Tom-a-mhoid road, just up from Dunoon town centre. Originally, Jimmy and Kenny bought the middle shop, which previously was an Oxfam. As the years passed, they decided to grow the business and bought the two adjacent shops, one of which was a hairdressers and the other a doctors surgery.

Dae-it-yersel is known for its ceiling to floor shelving, with something crammed into each and every space. You can loose hours rooting around the assortment of boxes filled with various ironmongery items, and indeed many of our customers do.

On our 40th birthday in 2010, and after more than 35 years at the Tom-a-mhoid premises we decided to refit the front of the shop since it was starting to show its age.

Here's the end result! Bigger and brighter windows with a bit more room inside too. The decision to re-fit the front of the shop wasn't something we took lightly and it did take a bit of getting used to, although now we are really glad we done it!

No space for waste

No space for waste

That odd DIY job may only need a handful of nails or a dozen screws to complete, yet at some DIY stores you may need to buy way more than you need to. That's not the case here at DIY. We know not all of our customers need a box of 200 screws or a kilo of nails, that is why we sell them loose. It creates less waste and our customers aren't burdened with a box of something they don't need.

Keeping it simple

Keeping it simple

Rather than over complicate things we like to keep it simple at Dae It Yersel. That is why you will find things like our 'high-tech' ordering system around the shop. It has worked for us for over 40 years, so there must be some method in the madness.

The Key Room

The Key Room

In keeping with our floor to ceiling shelving ethos, our key room is bursting with key blanks, locks and key cutting machines. With over 40 years experience in cutting keys and in excess of thousands of blanks, it is rare we come across a key we cannot cut.

Timber Yard & Advice

Timber Yard & Advice

Since opening, we have always stocked timber. It is one of our most demanded and popular product ranges, This is why we have 4 wood stores dedicated to storing and cutting the stuff for our customers. We also pride ourselves on the DIY advice that we have been able to give our customers over the years. It's great to have someone come in to the store with an idea in mind, asking for our help and advice and working together throughout the course of the project until the end result.

Dae-It-Yer-what?!

Dae-It-Yer-what?!

It is not too uncommon to see tourists and visitors to the town across the road from the shop snapping pictures of our unusual name. We must admit there has been quite a few with a glaze of bewilderment across their faces as they don't have a clue what it means, just some Scottish gibberish or something.

Helena & Kate - Wear it pink day

Helena & Kate - Wear it pink day

We try our best to do our bit for charity where we can in the shop. For the past few years this has seen a wear it pink fundraiser for Breast Cancer UK, amongst other charities and local causes.

Wear it pink Calum

Even Calum get's right in to the wear it pink spirit!

Dog Lovers

Dog Lovers

We are a shop of dog lovers, between all of the staff we have 13 dogs. Hence, dogs are always welcome in the shop. The only condition being, you should expect a delay in being served as we will steal your dog away to give them treat first before attending to their owner.

A FAMILY RUN BUSINESS

With their customers at the heart

Since opening in 1970, our customers have always been at the centre of every decision we make and that will continue to be the case for as long as we have our doors open. We pride ourselves on providing everyone who comes into the shop with the best service in town. Wether you are in for a few screws or are planning a major renovation everyone is treated with the same friendly service which most often comes with a side of sarcasm and laughter.

We strive to offer the widest range of products and services possible within the means of the capacity which we have at our disposal. However, given the vast range of items on the market it is not always possible to stock everything. Nevertheless, through the decades of us being in business we have established great relationships with all of our suppliers, meaning that we can source almost any item within a matter of days at very competitive prices. We also strive to go above and beyond expectations, that is why we offer free services such as timber cutting and delivery to all of our customers, make sure to check these out in the other services tab.

We hope you like our website and while you’re make sure to have a browse through all of the pages as we have tried to include something for everyone. We would also like to thank all of our customers, both past and present, for their business over the years, we would not have been able to make it 40+ years if it weren’t for your continued support.  And to all of you who have yet to venture along Tom-a-Mhoid road, pop in and meet the team, discuss DIY projects, the weather etc. and have a laugh with us.

Arrive as a stranger, leave as a friend.
